Chequerboard Floor Checks all the Boxes at Hong Kong Jockey Club

The Hong Kong Jockey Club was founded in 1884 and is the only authorised organisation to operate horse racing regularly in the country.  Stable Bend Terrace is a restaurant located within the Happy Valley Racecourse complex and is an area where the spectators can dine while overlooking the race track.

Stable Bend Terrace required a new flooring system that would be suitable for outdoor use to replace the existing finish, which was showing signs of ageing. To revitalise the floor area, 300m2 of Flowcrete Asia’s Rustik UV stone carpet system was selected due to its ability to provide a hardwearing surface that would maintain an aesthetically attractive and functional finish for an extended period of time.

The enhanced UV resistance of Rustik UV was critical for the Hong Kong Jockey Club, as it meant that the new floor would not deteriorate when exposed to prolonged periods of intense sunlight.

Rustik UV is  created by incorporating colourful natural stones in a clear aliphatic, UV stable polyurethane resin. This formulation makes it highly durable and able to withstand the heavy foot traffic that the Hong Kong Jockey Club will experience during a busy race season. The high degree of slip resistance of this solution also reduces the liklihood of customers slipping or tripping on the terrace while watching the races.

A particular challenge for Flowcrete’s approved applicator was to create a chequerboard pattern across the outdoor area. The application was carried out in stages over a one month period and the owners were very pleased with the appearance of the renovation.
